Scene Details:

  • The ruined church with its square tower and tall arched windows rises above the grounds
  • Broken stone walls and arches frame the remains of the nave and tower
  • Grass lawns, shrubs, and flowerbeds fill the foreground, and wooded hillsides slope down along the right side
  • Older stone buildings of the abbey complex appear at the left
  • Caption reads "Fountains Abbey." in the upper left corner

Postal Markings:

  • Card bears a circular HARROGATE cancel reading 10 PM Aug 1 05 over a green stamp bearing a profile portrait
  • Handwritten pencil message opens "Dear B & J" and describes arriving that day, mentions "The Crisis" to Germany, and reports having a most enjoyable time; several words are difficult to read
  • Addressed to Mrs. Lockey, 76 Julian Avenue, South Shields on Tyne
  • Red ornamental royal crest printed on the back with "B. Ackrill, Printer, Harrogate" and "Write here for inland postage only"
