Colour halftone postcard depicting a double bullock cart on a palm-lined road in Colombo, Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka), published by Platé & Co., Ceylon, No. 39, c.1905–1910. Two large draft bulls pull an enormous thatched-roof cart typical of Ceylonese transport, attended by two handlers in traditional dress.
Scene Details:
- Two large dark zebu/draft bulls yoked side by side, adorned with white head coverings
- Massive wooden-wheeled cart loaded with an oversized thatched bundle or thatch-covered cargo
- Handler standing centre between the bulls in colourful sarong; second handler at right holding tether
- Dense avenue of coconut palms lining both sides of a paved colonial road
- Printed caption lower right: "Double Bullock Cart, Colombo."
- Soft colour tinting: blue-green palm canopy, earthy road surface, warm brown cart
