Scene Details:

  • Chromolithograph multi-view court card postcard (approx. 3.6 x 4.5 inches), "From Compliments Brighton," no. 1105
  • Three vignettes with decorative floral and scrollwork borders:
  • Top: West Pier โ€” long pier extending into the sea with pavilion structures; promenaders on the beach and seafront
  • Upper right: Aquarium โ€” seafront street scene with clock tower, Victorian buildings, and elegantly dressed pedestrians
  • Lower left: Hove Town Hall โ€” ornate Victorian Gothic municipal building with figures on the street
  • Pink and yellow wild rose blossoms overlaid across the centre
  • Message written across the front (undivided back era): "Dear Nora, I have not forgotten you or your collection yet, but writing is always put aside for everything else. Last week I spent in Brighton with friends, so got this, but it is hideous after the foreign ones. How are you getting on? With much love from Winifred Devenish."
  • Handwritten date upper right: "Gothic House 1-3-'00" (1 March 1900)
  • Made in Germany (printed on front left edge)

  • One penny mauve Queen Victoria "Postage and Inland Revenue" stamp affixed, cancelled
  • Circular date stamp: Brighton, 2 Apr [?], 4 PM (partially legible)
  • Second circular postmark: Brussels arrival mark, partially legible
  • Small paper label/sticker affixed over part of address (obscuring surname)
  • Addressed to: Miss N. von [Sollot?], 6 Rue Caponillet, Brussels, Belgium
  • Undivided back โ€” message written on front
