Historic Details:

  • The Toll House, Whitman, Massachusetts
  • Artistic drawing style typical of vintage postcards
  • Historic building that served as a toll house on the road between Boston and New Bedford
  • Later became the Toll House Inn where Ruth Wakefield invented the chocolate chip cookie in the 1930s

The Toll House was originally built as a halfway house in 1709, where travelers paid tolls on the road between Boston and New Bedford. In 1930, Ruth and Kenneth Wakefield purchased the building and turned it into the Toll House Inn. It was here that Ruth Wakefield created the Toll House Chocolate Crunch Cookie (later known as the chocolate chip cookie), which became one of America's most beloved desserts. This postcard captures the historic building that played such an important role in American culinary history.
