A lovely portrait of King George VI and family, April 1939
While researching this image, I discovered that it was taken by Toronto Star photographer Gerald Richardson. I hadn’t known his work before, so it was a real treat to stumble upon an NP article about him and learn more about his career. The article is included below.

This part below cracked me up a little. Every photographer who has ever worked with film, if honest will admit to having photographed with the dark slide still in. But what a moment for it to happen in – and I bet was the last time it happened to Mr. Richardson.
Richardson was set up perfectly for the first photo of the sitting, the King and his family walked regally down a garden path towards him.
“I had the first photo,” writes Richardson in his book. “Except that I had forgotten to pull the slide!”
King George, a seasoned photographer in his own right, quietly noticed and turned his family around, moving back 30 feet. “I think we’re going to have our picture taken,” commented the King as they walked the garden path a second time.
